Opera in the Zoo and a New Video
Hello All,
Just a quick update for your northeastern heat wave reading pleasure.
Firstly, I have to say that this has been quite the week for free new music events in NYC, including the Bang On A Can marathon, Philip Glass Ensemble at River to River, and Make Music New York. This is such an incredibly dynamic city full of (as far as I’m concerned) the best musicians in the world. Every concert is an artistic event of the highest caliber. I love being in the midst of it all.
One of the beautiful things about having so many great musicians here is that there are constantly new projects being launched. One of these is a new initiative called On Site Opera. On Site Opera is a new opera company built around the idea that exciting opera can happen outside the walls of a traditional theater. Through site-specific, immersive productions, performers and audiences will experience great music and drama as never before in some of New York’s most exciting and unusual spaces. I will be joining this organization for a performance of Shostakovich’s The Tale of the Silly Baby Mouse, a children’s opera that we will perform at the Bronx Zoo multiple times this weekend. If you’re looking for something to do that’s both fun and educational for your children, come on by:

During my 2007-08 Eurasian solo tour, I became great friends with the wonderful Greek composer Nickos Harizanos. We have had a number of collaborations over the past 5 years, including the creation of this piece/video/multimedia artwork Aeolian Windbag. The title (implicative as it may be…) refers to the scene in the Odyssey where Odysseus’ greedy crew opens the bag of winds given to him by the gods to help him home; the result being that the escaping winds drive them exponentially further off course. I perform the piece live to the video, and have made it a part of my Mythology and Modern Perception multimedia solo show (along with works by Nastasha Bogojevich, William Susman, and yours truly).
Here is the produced version of the video with my playing:
This version has been presented at a number of festivals, including recently at the Toronto International Film Festival.
